Chains

A typical chain is a series of linked loops of metal wire. Sometimes, connected balls or discs – instead of loops – are used for the chain links.

Early artisans fashioned chains by hand. Today, some chains are still handmade. But making chains by hand is a labor-intensive and costly process. Each link must be individually shaped, attached to the next link, and soldered shut. The advantage, though, is that designers can create unique chains, with intricately patterned links in unusual abstract shapes. However, most chains today are machine-made.

Heavy gold neck chains, worn with our without pendants, have been popular throughout history, especially in the Renaissance and Victorian eras. Today, neck chains in various link styles are available in a variety of standard lengths:

US                     Metric Countries

16 inches          40 centimeters

18 inches          45 centimeters

20 inches          50 centimeters

24 inches          60 centimeters

30 inches          75 centimeters

36 inches          90 centimeters

Chains are also popular worn around the wrist as bracelets, often in a matching neck chain and bracelet chain ensemble. The typical length for a woman’s bracelet chain is approximately 7.5 inches (19 centimeters).

Popular Chain Styles

The curb chain is a jewelry store staple. Sturdy and attractive, curb chains often form the links of traditional men’s and women’s identification bracelets. The curb chain style consists of oval links that are each twisted about 85 degrees and then flattened so the chain lies flat. Curb chains are strong yet flexible, and they tend to be simple to repair.

The Figaro chain is a fashionable version of the curb chain. The Figaro chain’s principal links are elongated. Between each pair of long links in a group of three short links. The term “Figaro” can also refer to other chain styles that contain one long link followed by a certain number of short links in a repeating pattern.

Rope chains are classics that offer a substantial, opulent look, especially in larger widths. These chains can be solid or hollow. Solid ropes are sturdy chains for suspending pendants and charms. Rope chains are usually made up of oval links. Two or more links are attached to each adjacent link. Small flat surfaces are sometimes applied to rope chain links for extra sparkle.
